1. When did you start your business and why did you start it?

I started sculpting large scale sculptures back in 1997 at ArtFX. They were looking for artists who could sculpt large scale oriental dragons. I came in and started with confidence and no back ground and I just make it happen. That how I started my profession.

2. What kind of products or services do you offer at your business?

I do fine arts, industrial arts, painting, sculpting for Disney, Warner Brothers and Nickelodeon. I also created sculptures for local restaurants. In Tampa, I created a 32 foot iguana for Green Iguana. In Clearwater and Dunedin, I created a 15 foot grouper for Frenchy’s.

3. How often do you shop at Fiberglass Coatings? What makes you a repeat customer?

I used fiberglass and resin for my sculpting job. My partner, Chad Fisher and I also build custom stand up paddleboards. We have a paddleboard company called Orange Board Company. We used fiberglass and epoxy resin for coating all the boards.

I use fiberglass, Surfboard resin and Table Top Epoxy. Also, you have great team of                 technical support that help me along with my project.

An interview with Chip Davis

Chip Davis VW Bug

What are you currently working on?

Right now, I just finished the VW Bus and I’m trying to figure out what else to do after that.

What made you decide to work on that?

I always look to make something weird and make people look and say “What the Hell?!”

What different products did you use to make that?

I started off with sheets of Styrofoam and glued them together and carved it with a hot wire or even a serrated steak knife. I coat it with PVA, then gelcoat, and finally, I used your Boatyard Resin to apply the coating.

How did you start this kind of work?

I started with Autobody work and started doing props for my church, I actually made a baby grand-piano completely out of foam, and one day, my neighbor fixed up my jet-ski, so I made him a jet-ski mailbox and I had so much fun with it, I kept going, ya know, just playing around with it and trying stuff and if it doesn’t work, trying something else.

I started with covering the foam in wax, to keep the gelcoat from melting it, and then I moved on to different coatings from there, just trying different things to see how they work.  I learned that you can learn anything from YouTube.

How often do you come to Fiberglass Coatings?

Every week or two, depending on the project; I come in and talk to Pat and everyone is more than happy to answer any questions I have.

Do you have any tips for someone who wants to do this?

Don’t be shy, just go try something and see if it works, and if it doesn’t, try something else. I also learned that too thin of gelcoat wrinkles up like bacon, so be sure to load it up pretty good; same thing with the PVA, I learned that you can apply it pretty thick and wait for it to dry and you’ll be good to go.

Lastly, how did you make the VW emblem?

It is leather, actually! I got some pieces of leather and cut them to the right pattern and painted it.

Check out Chip Davis on Facebook and see some of the really cool pictures he has of some of his amazing products.

  1. When did you start your business and why did you start it?

I started my business about 25 years ago in Chicago when I worked in retail. My customers were the ones to launch my business by asking for my help with personal shopping. After retail hours, I spent my extra time with my customers helping them shop for clothing and helping them find the right paint and decorating. After moving to Florida, I formed an LLC and began painting, decorating and image consulting just as I was doing in Chicago.

About eight years ago Time Warner, now known as Bright House, found and hired me to decorate their corporate offices for the holidays. I began building, engineering and fabricating to create the look I needed. I realized what I was creating in my head could not be bought and therefor I had to make it.

  1. What kind of products or services do you offer at your business?

We sell service, creativity and hard work…all to better you and your surroundings.

  1. How often do you shop at Fiberglass Coatings? What makes you a repeat customer?

I shop at Fiberglass Coatings to find materials that will work with my display materials. I use these materials for all kinds of projects; some are used as lightweight shapes to hang from ceilings. The liquids I purchase are used as a bonding for hardening surfaces so materials are more durable and or water proof.

     4. What products do you normally buy from Fiberglass Coatings? Can you tell us a specific product/products you buy and what you use them for?

We use fiberglass tape or material sheets and 2-part epoxy. We buy foam, tape, gloves, brushes, rollers, etc. Today, we are creating a hard-coat surface to hang styrofoam lettering from the ceilings for a holiday decoration project.
